Be aware: West Nile Virus has been found in mosquitoes throughout Lorain County

Posted on:

West Nile Virus (WNV) has been found in mosquitoes throughout Lorain County. While common, this year we’ve seen a rapid increase in WNV-positive mosquitoes much earlier than expected.

Be aware and take precautions to reduce your risk.
Wear mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially in the evening.

What we’re doing to protect the public from WNV.
Lorain County Public Health (LCPH) has begun evening mosquito spraying to reduce your risk from these WNV mosquitoes.

  • Sprayings will be done throughout Lorain County; usually between 8 p.m. - 12 a.m.
  • It will take several weeks to complete these spray applications, so LCPH first prioritizes areas where mass gatherings are scheduled (fairs, festivals, etc.).
  • We inform local leaders when their community is scheduled for spraying to help spread the word.

No cases of WNV in humans have been reported in Lorain County, as of 8/5/2024.
